SHAH ALAM: Blogger Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin said he was surprised to be released from detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

“Not many people who challenged Section 8 of the ISA have succeeded, so I did not give much hope to it. It is a sort of 50-50. I was surprised actually,” said the 58-year-old.

Asked about his feelings, Raja Petra said, “I am just too tired”.

To a question on what this experience taught him, he said, “I suppose we have to fight all-out to get the ISA abolished. I suppose the cause has been recognised.”

He also said that the ISA was not a valid law to be used against political dissidents.

“The court decision has made very clear the message that ISA cannot be used for political reasons.

“I am not a terrorist. I am not a dangerous person. I am just a writer,” he said.

Asked if he was looking forward to having Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as the Prime Minister, Raja Petra said, “I am waiting for Anwar (PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) to become the Prime Minister.”

The scruffy-bearded Raja Petra was given a hero’s welcome and garlanded with flowers as he walked out of the Shah Alam High Court a free man.

Smiling broadly, he spoke briefly to reporters before greeting the horde of supporters who were at the court since morning in anticipation of his release.

His supporters, clad in various colours with different slogans on their T-shirts saying, “Free RPK, Abolish ISA, We Want Our Rights, No to ISA and No Holds Barred,” clapped and cheered in and outside the courtroom.

Raja Petra left for home in a maroon Rolls-Royce car at 3.35pm.

He was accompanied by wife Marina Lee Abdullah. Also present was DAP’s Ronnie Liu, who is also a Selangor state executive councillor. - The Star

I've been neglecting my blog. But tonight I have to blog about my friend Pet. I spoke to his wife, Marina, this morning and we talked about Pet. I told her we need Pet around. We're worried about his kidney problem too if he insists to carry on with his hunger strike. I pity Marina. She must be mentally and physically drained. But I know she's a strong lady. She's right when she wrote, "we Petras' are not some tofus".

Thank God Pet has finally agreed to post bail. Kudos to Marina for her persuasion skills. Hopefully Pet will be out tomorrow before Friday prayers. Looking forward to seeing you Pet. We need you out here to keep on fighting. Heroes should not be behind bars, they should be out to fight for justice.

PETALING JAYA (May 8, 2008): malaysia-today.net's webmaster Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin, who refused bail on a sedition charge and went on a hunger strike in Sungai Buloh prison, has agreed to post bail after being persuaded by his wife today.

However, due to the fact that he only decided past noon, the 58-year-old blogger had to be held until tomorrow and is expected to be produced in the Petaling Jaya sessions court for his release.

In a sessions court here, Raja Petra's lawyer J. Chandra, who was with the blogger's wife, Marina Lee Abdullah, said the court had to follow procedures when releasing an accused under remand.

It is learnt that bail for those held is usually posted in the early hours of the day to enable police to produce the accused before noon.

"We tried to get him out by today but the judge chose to follow procedures and did not want to make an exception for him," said Chandra.

Marina had met with her husband in prison early today for about 10 minutes. She was relieved when he agreed to come home and end the hunger strike.

"Probably the note I left him on Wednesday in the prison helped a bit. All my note said was 'I want you home'. He was fine although he looked down due to a backache. He also told me he had something to eat and drink," she said.

Raja Petra is expected to be brought to court at 9.45am tomorrow after she posted bail of RM5,000.

Marina said although the online fund raiser for her husband's bail was closed several hours after it was open on Tuesday (May 6), it continued to swell and currently stands at more than RM44,000. On the first day, RM34,000 was collected from supporters of the controversial blogger known for his fiery and no-holds barred comments and articles.

She said although Raja Petra would decide what to do with the remainder of the money, she suggests the fund could be used to help bloggers in a similar situation.

"There is another blogger who is being charged, and posted bail of RM3,000. The general consensus is that we should keep the money for other bloggers who get into trouble like this," she said, adding that they would put it to an online vote.

They have used the draconian law again.

Today, five Hindraf leaders were arrested under the ISA. The five are:

1) P. Uthayakumar
2) M. Manoharan
3) V. Ganabatirau
4) R. Kenghadharan
5) T. Vasanthakumar

I'm really mad. And sad. Although we are living in the 21st century, some government still thinks it is right to detain people without trial.

All five were detained under Section 8 (1) of the ISA which means they got an express ticket straight to the Kamunting Detention Centre. They will be incarcerated there for at least two years. No court hearing, no need to present proof or anything. We jail you guys straight away for two years.

The detention order was signed by none other than Pak Lah aka Prime Minister aka Internal Security Minister aka Islam Hadhari advocate. Strangely, the second principle of Islam Hadhari is a "just and trustworthy government".

Just recently Pak Lah said he had "big ears" (oh really!) and willing to hear the people's grievances.

Is this the way you hear them, Pak Lah?

It's hard to listen to the people while you gas them in the face, says Farish Noor.

RPK aka Pet strikes back with more venom. It seems that his eight hours of interrogation is a comedy of errors. Read it, it's such a riot you'll go into fits.

I like this part:

I asked the police whether these postings are insulting the Agong, insulting Islam, and are trying to divide the races, or whether they are actually the reverse. The face of the ASP interrogating me turned red as he tried to explain that he was just doing his job and that he was ordered to take my statement. I replied that the person who made the police report is a stupid person who can’t speak English. So what do you expect from someone like that? He can’t even understand comments that are appealing for national unity and instead interpret it as calling for racial strife.

“Do you know that that orang bodoh ran away with the Sultan’s daughter and then denied it?” I asked the police. They just smiled. “Well, I am going to reveal this to the world,” I continued. “I am going to publish the letter he wrote to the Sultan where he denied he had married the Sultan’s daughter whereas he had in fact already secretly married her in Thailand. You tengoklah. I akan balun si bodoh tu habis-habis.”

The police appeared amused at what I had to say although their only retort was, “Banyak maklumat kita dapat hari ini.”

They then wanted to know the identity of those who post comments in Malaysia Today’s blogs. I told them I do not know who they are but I do know that amongst them are 25 Umno cyber-troopers headed by Azalina and Norza.

“Azalina?” they asked.

“Yes, Azalina lesbian,” I replied.

“Oh, Azalina Othman.” Apparently they know who I meant by Azalina lesbian.

“I did not say Azalina Othman. I said Azalina lesbian. You are supposed to record everything I say the way I say it. That is what a cautioned statement under Section 112 is all about. Saya kata Azalina lesbian. Bukan Azalina Othman. You record what I say and I will sign the statement.”

The second police officer stopped typing and scratched his head with a sheepish grin on his face. “Okaylah, I don’t want you to get into any trouble. Drop the lesbian and change it to Othman.” The second officer continued typing while chuckling. He was certainly enjoying himself. [Malaysia Today]

Of course I'm angry. Especially when I know Pet personally. We worked together before in one "projek haram". I sent him an sms while he was on his way to Dang Wangi. I wish I could be there with him. The cops interrogated him for about eight hours. I wish the cops all the best. Knowing Pet, he would have surely given them hell.

I'm sick of this sort of intimidation. Especially when a wanker such as Nazri tries to be the defender of Islam and the Agong. What an idiot!

Those goons in Umno always tell us that "our party is strong, we have three million members bla bla bla..." If you think you're so strong why are you so afraid of bloggers? Why are you so paranoid of the truth?

Nat Tan released on police bail around 5.00 pm today. And the first thing he wants to do is eat roti canai.

The country has gone potty. Well, it has always been that way I guess. Imagine you can be hauled up just because someone posted a comment in your blog. Poor Nat Tan. If charged under the OSA he might end up in the slammer for at least a year.

This is purely a political detention if you ask me. Just to intimidate bloggers. And perhaps to gather info from him that can be used against the Opposition in the coming elections. Nat Tan is, after all, Anwar Ibrahim's executive secretary at Foundation for the Future.

Whatever it is, bloggers must never be intimidated. No fear, remember?

As I blog this Nat Tan is still in court awaiting remand order. After been given the run-around by the ever "efficient" police force, Nat Tan is now facing charges under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

I don't know him personally. But he's a blogger. And he's a fellow human being. I, no WE, must walk with him. As someone who's been in that kind of predicament, all I can say to him is, "Hang in there bro. Be strong and have faith in the struggle."

The police has done it again. They have proved time and again that they're really "efficient". Efficient in nabbing activists and members of the opposition party.

This time, Nathaniel Tan aka Nat Tan, 26, was detained by the SB for his postings on the internet. He was brought to Bukit Aman for questioning according to malaysiakini. "Nak cakap tentang internet," said the police. Yeah, right!

The police also told him to bring along his notebook computer. Yup, just a notebook. Not an AK-47, rocket launcher or C4.

Opposition muzzled - here's black and white proof

It’s an open secret that the government issues directives to state-owned television and radio stations to black out the opposition. But it now appears that private stations also receive similar directives.

Malaysiakini has obtained a copy of the letter from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) ordering all private TV and radio stations to stop airing speeches by opposition leaders. [See original letter]

“The government has noted that several private TV and radio stations have been airing speeches by opposition party leaders,” wrote MCMC chairman Dr Halim Shafie in the June 7 letter.

“Your station is requested not to broadcast such speeches in future.”

The one-page letter added that the directive should be implemented immediately.

Halim could not be reached for comment.

MCMC, a government agency under the Energy, Water and Communications Ministry, is empowered to regulate matters relating to communications and multimedia activities, including private TV and radio stations as well as Internet websites.

The licencing of private TV and radio stations comes under its purview.

The letter was carbon-copied to Energy, Water and Communications Ministry’s secretary general Dr Halim Man.

No such directive

Yesterday, private station ntv7 denied opposition party claims that it had received a directive ordering it to censor opposition comments in news broadcasts.

Opposition member of parliament Tan Kok Wai told a press conference on Wednesday that he had received information from a reliable source of a directive to the media to stop airing comments from opposition parties.

The DAP parliamentarian said the directive tantamount to political discrimination against opposition parties.

I had the strangest of dreams last nite.

I dreamt I was detained under the ISA. Strange. Really strange. And funny too. It seemed so real though. The funny thing was I had my mobile phone with me and tried calling for help. But they jammed my phone. Wacky tunes including loony cartoons would play everytime I dialled a number.

Another strange thing was my sis paid a visit on the first day (which is impossible in a real life ISA detention). I asked her how many were detained.

"You're the only one."

I was like "WHAT?!!!" And kept asking myself why they didn't arrest my friend as well.

Also met the Darul Islam guys who were detained earlier. One was already gila due to drug overdose. And I knew who did that to him. Poor guy.

Gheez...what a strange dream. Still trying to figure out why I had such a wacky dream.

Maybe tonight there will be a sequel. And I hope Jessica Alba will be detained too.

Task force to check on websites

A task force will be formed to study the need to regulate Internet sites with pornographic and seditious content.

Sources told the New Straits Times that the task force would tread carefully so as not to violate the bill and would study existing laws, such as the Sedition Act, to see how it could be expanded to include Internet content.

The websites to be monitored are those which contain pornographic material and those, including blogs, which carry seditious material.

"These include blogs which post inflammatory content against other races or religions and not just blogs on politics or those which criticise the government," a source said.

The task force will study "tricky" issues like the problem of identifying anonymous bloggers, the handling of websites with servers located overseas, and the application of sedition law in cyberspace. [NST, 15 June 2007]

Adalah dikhuatiri tanda-tanda perkembangan yang luarbiasa timbul di dalam perbicaraan kes pembunuhan Altantuya telah pun timbul pada Mac 9 apabila perbicaraan itu secara tiba-tiba diambil daripada Hakim K.N. Segara dengan alasan penjadualan semula kes-kes di Mahkamah Tinggi Shah Alam dan salah satu daripada pihak tertuduh telah memohon untuk perbicaraan awal. Sekiranya benar pun kes ini hendak dibawa ke hadapan, tidak ada alasan kukuh untuk memindahkan kes ini dari Hakim Segara kepada hakim yang lain. Perpindahan kes ini, untuk mematuhi prinsip-prinsip kebebasan kehakiman, seharusnya timbul daripada hakim yang mengadili kes tersebut sendiri yang jelas sekali tidak berlaku di dalam kes ini.

Kini wujud spekulasi meluas bahawa akan ada perkembangan mengejutkan apabila perbicaraan disambung minggu hadapan. Ini termasuklah cadangan bahawa dakwaan terhadap Abdul Razak Baginda dan sekurang-kurangnya salah satu daripada pihak tertuduh akan digugurkan dan kemungkinan hakim perbicaraan akan ditukar sekali lagi – semua tindakan ini untuk menghalang fakta-fakta tertentu dari muncul – fakta-fakta yang mungkin mengaibkan seorang menteri.

Spekulasi sebegini telah menjadi lebih rancak dengan pertukaran pihak pendakwaraya secara tiba-tiba sebagaimana terjadi pada 4 Jun 2007. Penjelasan Peguam Negara bahawa perubahan ini perlu memandangkan beliau mendapat maklumat bahawa Timbalan Pendakwa Raya utama sering bermain badminton dengan Hakim yang mendengari kes ini tidak melibatkan isu-isu pokok yang telah ditimbulkan. Kini telah jelas bahawa sesi badminton ini sudahpun diketahui umum di kalangan peguam dan hakim – maka amatlah tidak munasabah bahawa Peguam Negara tidak mengetahui perkara ini lebih awal lagi.

Lebih penting lagi, mengapakah Ketua Bahagian Sivil, Tun Majid Tun Hamzah yang mempunyai banyak tanggungjawab di sana, mengendalikan kes ini? Mengapakah Peguam Negara mengenepikan keseluruhan Bahagian Jenayah yang diketuai Datuk Yusof Zainal Abidin – adakah wujud konflik dalaman berkaitan kes ini?

Saya menyeru Peguam Negara untuk menjawab isu-isu ini dan menangani spekulasi yang telah timbul.

Juga yang menjadi kekhuatiran kami ialah dakwaan bekas peguambela Zulkifli Nordin yang mewakili Inspektor Azilah (salah satu pihak tertuduh) bahawa beliau mendapat tekanan dari "campurtangan pihak ketiga" untuk menarik diri. Ini tuduhan yang teramat serius dan mestilah disiasat secara serius dan segera oleh Peguam Negara.

Sistem pengadilan Malaysia juga kini sedang diperhati oleh seluruh dunia di dalam kes ini. Peranan polis, Kamar Peguam Negara dan kehakiman akan dipantau secara dekat.

Sebelum ini, saya juga telah menarik perhatian kepada kelemahan yang amat serius di dalam penyiasatan pihak polis. Persoalan yang telah saya timbulkan berkaitan tiadanya siasatan terhadap peranan Timbalan Perdana Menteri Dato' Seri Najib Tun Razak masih belum dijawab. Persoalan mengenai sama ada kes ini ada kaitan dengan kontroversi berkaitan pembelian kapal selam Scorpene dan komisyen yang cukup tinggi bernilai RM530 juta kepada Perimekar Sdn. Bhd., sebuah syarikat yang mempunyai hubungan dengan Abdul Razak Baginda dan rakan-rakannya juga belum dijawab. Kini, perkembangan terbaru – termasuk perubahan hakim perbicaraan dan penukaran pendakwaraya pada saat-saat akhir – akan mengecewakan lagi harapan orang ramai bahawa perbicaraan ini akan dijalankan secara telus dan adil. Seluruh dunia dan rakyat Malaysia mahukan jawapan sebenar di dalam mahkamah berkenaan bagaimana Altantuya dibunuh, mengapa beliau dibunuh dan siapakah yang bertanggungjawab di dalam mengarahkan pembunuhannya.

Now, can the government get any dumber than this?

Went to Dina Zaman's book launch on Wednesday nite. Great launch. But the "male-dressed-as-female" dance ritual was a tad peculiar for me. "It's sufi" says Dina. Like that ah?

I'm sure there were gatecrashers although the book launch was "by invitation only". It's in Central Market, what do you expect? And Malaysians do like to gatecrash. Kita kan rakyat jelata yang berkulit tebal. By the way Central Market looks so nice and classy. Haven't been there for ages hence I was pleasantly surprised to see the transformation.

While I was admiring the paintings I heard someone's voice.

"Pak Man!"

Hey, my anak buah pun ada. Dik Wan, is a musician and he's there to perform during the launch. His gendang group brought the roof down. Nice show. Also met my ITM junior. Actually I only know her face, not her name. We chatted while I was trying hard to recall her name. I'm bad at remembering names. Faces boleh ingat but names a bit susah unless you look like Hannah T.

Talking about "gatecrashers" another infamous Malaysiana is that we don't know when to shut up. People giving speeches kat depan, people pot-pet pot-pet kat belakang. Performance and readings kat depan, people pot-pet pot-pet kat belakang. There are times for chatter and there are times for respect.

All in all it was a successful launch. I'm happy for her. It's a dream come true. I hope she can become really kaya as a writer. Go buy her book. It's out now. It's witty yet thought provoking. Only RM30. Nope, Dina ain't gonna give me "duaapulohperrsen" royalty. I just like to promote local writers. More so when the writer is a friend.

Susan tagged me so now I have to tell the whole world 6 weird things about myself. By the way, who the hell created this tag thingy? I thought it was the same as SmartTAG.

6 weird things about me (and all are subject to debate):

1. I hate going to school. When I was a kid my parents had to scream and shout to make me go to school. My dad even called a couple of bomohs to treat my "problem". I thought that was weird. Meeting the bomoh, I mean.

2. I have MVP - mitral valve prolapse. No it's not an MPV. My cardiologist says MVP is not a disease. Just a weird valve I guess. For further info call IJN. Or Google it.

3. I like to smell new books or magazines. Yes, I do read them too. This weirdness is now slowly healing.

4. I like to criticise the Malays although I myself am a Malay. My amoi friend Audrey thinks it's weird. I think it's therapeutic. Weird meh?

5. I don't conform, I rebel. Against anything. To the point of being annoying. Is that weird?

6. I don't like pineapples aka buah nanas. My lelangit would feel gatal-gatal if I eat pineapples. I don't know the English word for lelangit. And I'm not talking about the sky.

There you go. Taking part in this is weird enough for me. I know, the rules state that I'm supposed to tag 6 other people. I'm not going to. Please refer to item No. 5.

Dendam

I was sort of forced to watch "Bersama Dato' Dr. Fadzillah Kamsah" last night. Actually, my brother wanted to watch it so I had no choice since he's holding the remote. Ok, I was curious to see what's it all about too.

The topic of the day was "Dendam". You know, the feeling of being revengeful or spiteful. I have nothing against that dude but sometimes his answers are like an insult to my little intelligence. You see, there was a lady caller from Johor. Come to think of it, there were lots of calls from Johor. Don't you guys have better things to do, like cleaning your house after the banjir?

Anyway, this lady lamented about her hubby. She's been married for three years. Her complaint was, her hubby doesn't seem to care about finances. The financial burden is on her mostly. And he doesn't care about her feelings too. In other words, he's a jerk lah. Because the hubby is a jerk, she feels "dendam" or "kecil hati". So she asked our learned Dato', what should she do?

You know what our Dato' said?

"Saya nak ingatkan kepada semua orang perempuan lah. Yang pertama bersyukur lah sebab you ada suami. Ramai yang kat luar sana tak ada suami. Jadi, bersyukurlah sebab ada suami."

Seriously, are you nuts?

The hubby is like a jerk and you want her to be grateful just because she has a hubby?

Again, are you nuts?

Where did you get your Ph.D? From Universiti Bawah Pokok issit?

Then as usual our learned Dato' Dr. would prescribe some "doa". As if that would help save the marriage. Fine, you can doa, pray or whatever. But you need to "usaha" too. Help doesn't come from the sky without hard work.

And that reminds me of someone I know. Before she got married she did the "sembahyang istikharah". She was in a dilemma whether the hubby-to-be was really her Mr Right. So she prayed. She got her answer. She married the guy. To make a long story short, the-after-sembahyang-istikharah-Mr Right goes on to have some affairs with other women. She can't share her secrets with her hubby aka the-after-sembahyang-istikharah-Mr Right. When she's broke she can't even borrow money from him.

So, tell me. Just by praying and doa, can you be guaranteed of marital bliss?

I don't think so.

My logic is simple. If you can't use your bloody common sense, then no amount of doa can help you.

Take that from me.

I woke up this morning to the sound of smses. With my eyes half-opened I text back. Birthday wishes from sisters, nieces, friends. Thanks for remembering my birthday. Though I don't really celebrate birthdays nowadays, expensive gifts like sports car and condominium are most welcomed.

Oh yeah, even Celcom gave me a birthday card. For the first time. Unlike my Raya card, this time they got my name right.

It's not too late to wish myself and everyone Happy New Year rite.

After the earthquake my already crappy internet is even crappier now. Slow like siput. And sometimes siput lagi laju. Haven't been able to even check my emails for the last few days. I don't know whether I can post this entry. Blogging with my fingers crossed now.

Raya Haji was a low key affair. New Year was even lower key.

Was all alone on malam raya. So I did a crazy thing. No, I didn't get laid. I washed my car at 1.00 am, in the wee hours of the morning cos esok nak raya. Ok actually the car dah kotor giler. I can't drive a dirty car cos "saya seorang yang pembersih lagi bersopan-santun".

Washing your car under dim lighting can pose a problem. I realised in the morning that I missed a few spots. So the car is like macam orang mandi tak sudah. But what the heck, it still looks better than before.

Last nite (or rather in the wee hours of the morning, again) I did another crazy thing. Ya tahun 2007 adalah tahun untuk membuat keje-keje giler. Lagi giler dari Tahun Melawat Mesia. I cooked rice and goreng telur at 2.00 am then makan. Bukan sahur dan bukan supper. It's dinner. Then watched TV and slept at 4.00 am.

So now I'm sleepy. Very sleepy. No wonder my notebook screen look like one kind only.

And that's why I need to click "publish"...

Islamic authorities in the country should stop spying on couples in search of illicit pre-marriage canoodling, Perlis mufti Mohamed Asri Zainul Abidin has reportedly said, arguing it violates Islamic principles of privacy.

Under Islamic law, which operates alongside the civil code in multicultural Malaysia, khalwat - close proximity between a man and a woman who are not married - is forbidden.

Mohamed Asri joined critics who said that the investigations are often heavy-handed and unwarranted.

An American tragedy

He raised the recent case of an elderly American couple on a sailing holiday in Malaysia whose hotel room was raided by Islamic authorities who refused to believe they were Christians and had been married for 42 years.

"It is an embarrassment to Islam to see religious officers going to hotels and demanding the guest list," Mohamed Asri told the New Straits Times.

"Islam does not encourage people to look for acts of sin... to invade an individual's privacy is against Islam," he said.

The mufti said there were many other cases where married Malaysian couples had been raided in their own homes, and questioned the practice of bringing along unauthorised people, including the media, to khalwat raids. - AFP

Well, what do you expect when you have a pea-brain minister. And the people who vote for his kind are actually more pea-brain than the pea-brain minister.

Received an email from Susan my activist friend who's now based in Bangkok.

Dear Friends,

Here's more info. on Altantuya Sh. It seems "a certain newspaper" paid the Mongolian newspaper to whip up negative stories on this unfortunate woman. And that her trip to Malaysia was to ask Baginda to settle payment for her business services.

Then another email.

(Dec 14, Bangkok) I received an alert late last night.

The lawyer, Mr. Budragchaa Bayar, who is conducting the watching brief for Ms. Altantuya Shariibuu's murder case, on behalf of her family and NGOs, found himself in a lurch in Kuala Lumpur. The court case is supposed to be mentioned in Shah Alam this morning of Dec 14.

He was supposed to be met by Consul officials at the airport, but upon arrival, found no one there. However, two journalists from Mongolia, were received instead. Fishy, isn't it, when he was assured by officials in Mongolia that he would be duly taken care of when he is in KL?

I panicked a little. I felt something was amissed. With Mongolians being blown up with C4 explosives, I feared for Mr. Bayar's safety.

I quickly shot an email to the usual suspects: Ms. Elizabeth Wong , Mr. Yap Swee Seng and Mr. Chang Lih Kang, from SUARAM, asking for their help in this mighty hour at night.

These are the times I wished I were back home in Malaysia.

But thank God, some human rights activists don't sleep.

I caught Ms. Elizabeth online, and we quickly exchanged information. She immediately offered to call Mr. Bayar, and found out that he was fine. See more details of this in her blog.

Now, I am quite mad. The poor man was supposed to be brief by the Consul about the court case tomorrow. But that did'nt happen at all, because the Consul (or his staff) was missing-in-action.

Mr. Bayar was not informed about which court to go to, and what time. He didn't even know that tomorrow's session was merely procedural, just a mention, to set the actual trial dates.

So, if it had not been for Elizabeth's intervention, who knows what might happen to another Mongolian, walking down the street of KL.

With all the mystery surrounding this crime, it's a perfect make-up for an X-File series!

It's in Bruneian language. She asked me to translate but I'd prefer to keep it authentic. Maybe I just translate some parts that are quite complicated to comprehend. I reached Dataran Merdeka at about 4.00 pm. The crowd were more than 2,000 already. And the numbers were swelling. Everybody was waiting for someone to start the "party". I and my brother wandered around watching the crowd. Saw my buddy and we talked and updated each other on the latest political situation.

Then we heard the now familiar battle cry of "Re-for-ma-si!"

Yes, the party has begun. I went straight to the thick of the action. While we were holding up a banner and chanting Re-for-ma-si! the crowd surged forward. We were joined by more people which among them were the Special Branch (SB) and the press. Cameras were clicking away. Apart from TV crew there were also people with handycams which I believe were the SB.

One guy who was too vocal and seemed like he was possessed was quickly detained by the cops. They threw him inside a white Proton Wira and drove on, his fate unknown.

And the battle cry grew louder and louder.

All roads leading to Dataran Merdeka were now closed . The demo had spilled over to the middle of the streets. I could see the FRU with their water cannon facing us. We formed a human barricade. As we were about to march towards the FRU, someone shouted,

"Hoi, pusing belakang!"

We were confused. Something was amiss. "The police will move in soon," I thought.

As I was about to turn, someone grabbed my hands from behind.

"Polis!"

I knew I was being arrested. While I was being dragged to the mobile police beat (it's a bus actually but the interior is like an office) I told the cop who held me, "Rilek brader, rilek."

I thought he would "relax". I was wrong.

Once in the bus, he threw me on the floor and started kicking and punching me while cursing at the same time.

"Pengkhianat kau! Malu kan negara aje!"

(Err...polis pukul orang tak malukan negara ke brader?)

"Aku penat Commonwealth tak abis lagi ni"

(Ohh...he was on duty during the Commonwealth Games at that time. Kalau penat berehat kat rumah lah brader. Kejar-kejar orang buat pe. Bukan dapat gold medal pun...)

Punch punch. Kick kick.

I tried to ward off his attack using my hands. That made him angrier. He gave me one really hard kick on the side of my body and then stepped on my ribs. Luckily he didn't break 'em tho he was wearing boots that could kill a dog.

He then took my IC and gave it to his superior.

More comrades joined me in the bus. Some were handcuffed.

Saw a young chap sitting on the floor, his hands handcuffed.

The cop shouted at him,

"Kau ni budak UIA kan? Ni mesti korang punya keje!"

Another chap was thrown into the bus, crying. The cops laughed at him.

We were later transferred to the police truck aka the Black Maria. Our next destination would be the police HQ (IPK) where we would be processed.

There were two trucks in the middle of the road. Both were jam-packed. The other truck was like a packed sardine.

As we waited inside the truck one high-ranking cop wielded something-that-looks-like-a-big-shaver. That big "shaver" can give you a not-so-nice-electric-shock.

"Siapa bising-bising lagi, nampak ni?!"

Bzzzzt....bzzzzzt...!

The Kg Berembang tragedy

You won't read about this in the mainstream newspapers. Especially not in Utusan Malaysia. This is the kind of thing that makes my blood boil like an active volcano.

"The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council tore down the only remaining structure in Kampung Berembang in Ampang - a surau - but not before leaving the 30-year-old village looking like a battle ground.

Scores of residents of Kampung Berembang, along with members of several non-government organisations and political parties, were involved in a physical battle with enforcement officers from the council, who were backed by police and the Federal Reserve Unit to save the surau.

Last week, the council had demolished all the 50-odd houses in the village, leaving only the two-storey surau behind - that too after a long and hard protest by the villagers and members of a grassroots movement, Jerit." [malaysiakini, 30/11/2006]

If this is not kezaliman then I don't know what is.

"The officers were seen pulling the hair of some of the women and slapping the children who refused to leave the surau.

"I was afraid but somehow I found the courage to try to stop the officers, maybe because I care for the surau," said Aida Suhaida (below), 15, who was slapped by a MPAJ officer.

"We are women, and the men should not touch us, but they kicked me and stepped on my stomach while I was sitting at the (surau's) staircase," said Norhasliana Osman Taad, 22, who was pull by the officers until her cloth was torn.

"They slapped my face until my eyes turned red. The children were also stepped on by them," she said.

In the aftermath of the melee, 11 people - nine activists and two villagers - were arrested and taken to the Ulu Kelang Taman Keramat police station and Ampang Jaya police station.

As the dust settled, Kampung Berembang looked like a battle zone with villagers fallen to the ground, some crying in pain, about four fainted and some vomited as a result of sheer exhaustion." [malaysiakini, 30/11/2006]

Staring at the face of cruelty, race and religion do not matter.
Salute the warriors - students, activists, NGOs, opposition leaders and the people of Kg Berembang.

I wonder what ever happened to all the Hidup Melayu! bullshit. Where was the keris-wielding Umno Youth leader?

There must be a humane solution to this. What happened to "masyarakat penyayang"? Islam Hadhari?

The Kg Berembang case is still pending in court and yet the authorities can't wait to demolish the houses and leave scores homeless. Don't they have even an iota of compassion running through their veins?

Even a letter from the PM's Dept failed to stop the demolition. Not so powerful lah you Pak Lah after all.

Why demolish now? During rainy season? When there are children taking their SPM exams?

Day off

I took a day off on Tuesday. It's so nice when you're at home lepak-ing on the sofa watching Astro while other people are working or pretend to do some work.

Switched channels after channels.

Saw 5 Takes on Travel & Living where five mat and minah sallehs went for a tour in Singapore. Talking about Singapore, I've not been to the so-called kiasu island for a long, long time. The last time I was there was during the Whitney Houston concert. Yeah I went all the way to Singapore just to catch Whitney. And my buddy Nuar, the Whitney Houston fan-atic, was "detained" for a while for a urine test at the border check-point and I didn't even realise it. I thought he was abducted by Singaporeans. Or he was too kiasu to see Whitney. Well, we did manage to see the concert after I almost lost my mind (and balls) trying to find him.

I should make a trip down there again. No matter what Mahathir says about Singapore, we must remember that historically the island was a part of us. It will always be. We can't simply cut the umbilical cord just for political hubris. We must also remember that they have The Singapore Girl a.k.a the world-renowned Singapore Airlines stewardess. Jangan lupa, penting tu. Maybe when I'm down there (in Singapore, I mean) The Singapore Girl can be my tour guide :-)

From 5 Takes I watched the repeat of 3R. Good programme that 3R. The topic was about 'clingy girlfriends'. Don't you just hate clingy girlfriends. Or boyfriends for that matter. But they don't call 'em clingy boyfriends. There's another word for it - possessive.

Girls, I know it's lovey-dovey and sweet when you care so much. But don't overdo it lah. If you overdo it, it won't be as sweet. It becomes masam. When you really, really overdo it, it becomes ketiak masam. Anyway, girls/ladies/women/wives take matters of the heart seriously. Unlike men. While women keep the love close to their hearts, men like to keep close to the women's chest. If you get what I mean.

Tell me how many guys keep a diary. Ask a she (forget about shemale) and the odds are that she keeps one. My sisters kept a diary or rather had one during their pre-marital days. Now they keep other things like babies, pots and pans and a big baby called The Husband.

I don't recall having kept a diary before. Dairy milk yes I like.

Well said bro. I remember "watching" one of Razak's films during one of those boring Raya reruns. I think it was Mistik. Or was it Potret Mistik? Whatever 'stik' lah. Anyway, the script was so simple. Everybody was screaming. Aaaaaaa! Makkkkkkk! Ohhhhhhhh! Aaaaaaaaa! I watched it for only five minutes before I started cursing. It was really a "horror" movie.

I believe films should be the manifestation of life. But when people [read: Melayu] go in droves to the panggung in awe of films like Sembilu and Nana Tanjung, it is actually a sad reflection of our own society.

He's been charged today with abetting the murder of Mongolian beauty Altantuya Shaariibuu.

But I find this disturbing:

SHAH ALAM: Counsel for the two policemen charged with Altantuya Shaariibuu’s murder had a long list of grievances against the police.

"How do you expect me to defend my clients when I cannot meet them?" Shaun Tan Kee Shaan said.

Claiming that police had not been transparent in their investigations, Tan questioned their motive for keeping him away from his clients.

"What is there to hide?" he asked. "I was only given five minutes to see them, and that too, after they were charged." [NST, 16/11/2006]

Lawyer for Razak faces the same problem.

Tan’s grievances are similar to that of Datuk Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, who is representing a political analyst who has been remanded in connection with the case.

Shafee had also complained that police had not given him access to his client.

Tan said he was waiting at the Kuala Lumpur courts since 9am yesterday and was not informed that his clients would be charged in Shah Alam.

"Neither the police nor the DPP informed me. I was told by a reporter!

"I have handled other cases in the past, but this is the first time I am having so much problems with the police." [NST, 16/11/2006]

The Grand Circus is back!

The Grand Circus is back in town.

You can see lots of clowns clowning around at the Grand Circus. Like always they will be in their white and red or pink uniforms. They will shout Hidup Melayu! many times. Then they will talk about "hak-hak bangsa kita". Other races are out to get our "hak", or so they say. Junior and senior clowns will continue to worship their Chief Clown. Like always, you can hear the mantra "wa ampu sana wa ampu sini." Loud and clear. They will try to outdo each other. They will also think hard on how to make their bellies bigger.

Not so long ago, the Chief Clown cried. "Dah lama dah...," he cried. One Makcik Clown rushed to the podium and yelled "no...no...why...why...?". And other clowns cried too. One almost fainted. Not sure whether it's because of the extreme joke or extreme love for the Chief Clown. That Chief Clown who cried is no longer the Chief Clown. Now they have a new Chief Clown. Maybe he will cry too.

So, let's go to the Grand Circus. It's an annual event. Admission is free. Bring along your kids .

However, some jokes can be pretty offensive and disturbing. Parental guidance is advised.

Nope. I've not been procrastinating.

Just that broadband at my office-that-is-within-the-MSC has been down since Raya. Today miraculously it's up and running. The dial-up internet in my home is non-existent now. Don't ask me why. Ask Telekom, TMNet, Jaring, Multimedia Commission and pihak-pihak yang berkenaan.

Broadband kat Mesia ni is really crappy, crappy, crappy. No, make that shitty, shitty, shitty (bukan Siti ok).

So, how many Raya Open House have you been to. Or how many have you not gone to? I went to two so far. Raya this year was a damper. Hujan, hujan, hujan. But the Raya chit-chat was hot though. Especially with the renewed Pak Lah-Mahathir spat. I'm sick and tired of it really. I'd rather spit at the spat. It's all about personal interest if you ask me. National interest? Porrrahhh!

Anyway, let that 81-year old man continue "tokking kok" (to borrow from Patrick Teoh's Teohlogy). Oh yeah, that "Istana Zakaria" in Klang was also the talking point when I got together with my cousins. I can't comment about that/him without using profanities in every three sentence. So I'd rather do something more worthwhile, like scratching my balls.

The courier guy came yesterday and handed a packaged addressed to me. "Dari Celcom bang, biasalah time Raya ni."

I was like wow...dahsyat Celcom bagi Raya gift to customers. What a pleasant surprise. I opened the package and there was a nice box stuffed with buah kurma and chocolates.

Then I realised there's also a Raya card. It was addressed to: Cik Rogayah bt Omar.

Huh? Who the heck is Cik Rogayah?!!

It was almost a perfect PR gesture from Celcom. Well, thanks anyway. Just make sure you guys get the name right next year.

'Dr M told me to resign'

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Salleh Abas yesterday revealed five incidents which he said proved that his fate as the Lord President was sealed before a tribunal heard misconduct charges against him in 1988.

He hoped that these incidents would meet the "new and important facts" criteria set by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz for a review of the 1998 judicial crisis.

"These new facts, I hope, could persuade Datuk Seri Nazri to change his mind. The incidents undeniably go to show that come what may, I must be made to give up my judicial office.

"There would, of course, be other incidents and other details which would emerge if the review is held but for the time being, I shall keep the identities of those unnamed persons concealed," said Salleh yesterday.

The five incidents which Salleh said would shed light on his sacking and the dismissal of Datuk George Seah and Datuk Wan Sulaiman Pawanteh are:

Incident No. 1:

The first incident relates to my meeting with the then prime minister in his office on May 27 in the presence of the then deputy prime minister and chief secretary to the government.

"I was asked by the then prime minister to step down because I was accused of being biased in the discharge of my judicial duties.

"My understanding of this accusation was that it must have been connected with the impending Umno 11 (the case involving 11 Umno members who sought to nuliify the 1987 party elections) case when I decided to establish a nine-member panel of the Supreme Court to hear the appeal.

"I strongly denied the accusation and told him that I was not prepared to resign. Then he threatened to dismiss me by instituting a tribunal under the Constitution. I told him I was prepared to be dismissed rather than leave the judicial office under a cloud."

Incident No. 2:

On May 27 1988, a messenger who was "a very important officer of the government" visited Salleh and tried to persuade him to resign or go on long leave. He rounded up by threatening Salleh with dismissal if he refused.

"Were I to resign, I would be appointed to a lucrative job in Jeddah as a director of an Islamic bank with a high salary, coupled with an unlimited amount of entertainment allowance and travelling expense.

"The officer said he had been authorised to pass this message to me by a very important minister. I was threatened with dismissal and the ignominy of facing a tribunal. I gave the same answer I gave the prime minister earlier."

Incident No. 3:

A month after his suspension, Salleh said he was summoned by some Malay rulers to Istana Kelantan in Jalan Kia Peng.

"I was told by the then Raja of Perlis that should I tender my apologies to and ask forgiveness from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for writing my letter to his Majesty, my suspension would be lifted and the matter would end there. I was to travel to Istana Bukit Serene with my chief counsel."

But Salleh alleged that the mission failed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had been "briefed by two senior government officers from Kuala Lumpur" not to forgive him.

Incident No. 4:

Salleh said his colleagues were suspended to thwart them from hearing a judicial review application challenging the legality and constitutionality of his suspension and the composition of the tribunal to deal with his dismissal.

Incident No. 5:

Salleh said that he and the late Tun Suffian Hashim acted as advisers to the Rulers when the government wanted to curb their immunity.

By then, the Sultan of Johor was no longer the Yang Di-pertuan Agong.

"This was my first audience with the Sultan after my dismissal and he said to me in no uncertain terms that he very much regretted what had happened to me... He said he then realised he had been 'made use of'."

Salleh said he told the Sultan not to feel sorry for him but "he should express his regrets and apology to the people of this country for losing a judiciary that was independent and could look after their rights."

"For these reasons, I hope Datuk Seri Nazri will present the proposal to the Cabinet for a review of the 1988 judicial crisis so that the truth of this important episode in our nation's history is uncovered."

Dr M: I personally asked Salleh to resign

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he had personally asked Tun Salleh Abas to resign from his post as Lord President in 1988 as he thought it was the best move. [The Star]

Now I feel sick.

This quote from that 83 year-old man named Mahathir is something that's not surprising. Was not he who said "Melayu mudah lupa"?

When asked if there was indeed such a job offer, Dr Mahathir said he could not remember what he had exactly offered.

“I don’t remember exactly what I offered him but I did ask him to step down so as to prevent any scandal or necessity to take action (against him),” he said, adding that he later started the necessary process to remove Salleh as the Lord President.

Is this the case of Melayu mudah lupa or Melayu mudah nyanyok?

I wanted to post this entry yesterday but my internet connection was down for almost two days. Though I'm within the MSC area the network is like crap. Syabas MSC! Malaysia sure can one!

28 September has a special place in my life. The ordeal that I went through eight years ago on this date would stick to me till my last breath. I came out from it a new man. I now see things in a more critical and sceptical way. Although I survived the ordeal my faith in certain institutions of the country fades away.

It was the best of times and it was the worst of times. I was in the thick of the action, so to speak. At that time I took my fight to the streets. I cried for reforms. I cried for justice. For all that I got arrested and spent a week in the police lock-up.

I've been told to write a book about my experience. But I guess I should just share it in my own blog. It's a long story. I would have to make a series of entries in this blog.

I shall start soon. I'll name it Dang Wangi.

Buah kurma

Pheww I finally did it.

The buah kurma had been sitting in my car for three days. Two boxes of 20 kgs buah kurma. Today I finally sedekah them to one rumah anak yatim near my home. Been wanting to do that for a long time.

When one of the rumah anak yatim I've been eyeing for was no longer around I went to one near my office. When I reached there, I was stunned.

"Alamak besar nye rumah anak yatim ni. Tak cukup ni. Buah kurma 20 kilo aje."

Called up my friend and she said there's one near my home. I thought that was the one I was eyeing for? There's one near the sekolah, she said.

So this morning I finally sent the buah kurma as my ramadhan sedekah for this year. Since I've been a bad boy I hope that would score me extra points :-)

A nice girl greeted me there. She seems to be in-charge today. It breaks my heart everytime I see anak yatim. The house is well-kept. It wasn't big nor small. Two other young girls came to help me carry the buah kurma. The girl-in-charge gave me a log-book to record my sedekah. Gave some money to her and before I left she flashed a sparkling smile,

"Terima kasih bang."

Felt relieved and sad. Especially when I think of the anak yatim there. Imagine celebrating Ramadhan and Hari Raya without your family and loved ones.

I hope when I'm a rich towkay one day, I can open a rumah anak yatim. Would be good if my rumah anak yatim is of mixed races and religions. I want to teach the young kids that bigotry, in any religion, is wrong.

Maybe having one rumah anak yatim of mixed races and religions would invite controversy. Maybe that Kongsi-Raya-Is-Haram Mufti would issue another one of his twisted fatwa that having anak-anak yatim of different races and religions under the same roof is haram.

If that happens, I would say, "Go fuck yourself ustaz!"

Selamat posa folks.

Thanks to those who sent me sms-es and emails wishing me selamat berpuasa. One thing though, please stop sending me Pengajian Agama Islam 101. I know that "keluar air mani dengan sengaja batal puasa." I also know that "bersetubuh di siang hari batal puasa." Kena bayar denda lagi. I learnt all that when I was in primary school. Give me something new guys.

Didn't do much yesterday being the first day of puasa. Just lepak on the sofa watching TV. Didn't score many pahala points especially when I changed to MTV or Channel V. By noon my tummy began to play lagu keroncong asli.

Managed to catch the repeat of OIAM though I'm not really a fan. Suki is my super duper trooper junior in KGV but I'm not proud that she won. I think she didn't deserve to win. Faizal was the best. Even Alif did better. But to give them one million ringgit? I don't think so. I think none of the contestants (Dayang included) are worth that kind of price tag. Go ahead you can hantam me.

However, one tembam singer caught my eye. I think it was Zai. She has that 'black' soulful voice. Tapi biasalah, orang kita dengar lagu pakai mata tak pakai telinga.

Gotta go...balik berbuka. Selamat berbuka.

Finding gula in this country is as difficult as finding water in the desert.

Went to a big pasaraya near my office and still no gula. With our XXL-sized cabinet team we still can't solve a simple problem like gula shortage. Why so stupid? The Pahang MB gave a brilliant solution that sounded like an-idea-coming-from-the-ass.

"Tak payah lah makan gula. Lagi baik. Makan gula banyak2 pun tak elok," katanya dengan lagak samseng yang dah menjadi sifat semulajadi beliau.

Simple solution from a simply stupid guy. Now I know why these people are called YB. Yang Bangang.

You're damn right I'm pissed. Not because of the lack of gula in my system. More got to do with the stupid people at Putrajaya. You guys can't even solve a simple problem like gula, how do you expect to deal with bigger issues? Like globalisation. Like FTA. Like macam-macam lagi.

After sniffing all over, managed to get my gula at my hometown pasar. Finally, but...

My house was broken into four times and now I sleep with a very sharp parang beside me. Whoever breaks into my house now will be hudud-ed.

'RM20mil for security beef-up at Seri Perdana too much'

A veteran opposition MP has asked why the government is spending RM20 million to upgrade the security features of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's official residence, Seri Perdana.

Tan Kok Wai (DAP-Cheras) in his debate on the 2007 Budget said the amount is high.

"I agree the prime minister deserves the best protection but this is just too high," he said.

Tan listed the equipment installed and the work done, which include:

RM1.32 million for initial works which include mobilisation, workmen, compensation, insurance, clearing of rubbish and coordination;

RM4.29 million for an anti-terrorist ramp;

RM3.46 million for CCTV cameras and additional security lightings at the south fencing;

RM3.88 million for a perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS);

RM1.06 million for control room;

RM900,900 for the south fencing with a PIDS system;

RM800,000 for feeder pillars and armour fibre cables and trenching;

RM820,700 for power cables for feeder pillars and trenching;

RM1.3 million for lightning, earthing, and surge protection systems for feeder pillars and camera poles; and

RM500,000 for the visitor management system.

He also questioned the logic behind the security upgrade at Sri Perdana, when it was built not so long ago.

RM600,000 for integrated building security system; and,

RM623,700 for integrated engineering, training and others.

"So unbelievable" was Tan's respond to the cost involved in refurbishment.

He also questioned why the contract to supply the security equipment was awarded to Tokai Lightning Protection Sdn Bhd, a Shah Alam-based company.

Tan said while most of the security equipment were imported nearly 30% of them were manufactured in Malaysia.

"So why did the cost get so high?" asked.

Tan questioned as to whether there was an open tender exercised for the project and if restricted tender was used, then why was the company in question chosen. [The Sun]

It is confirmed! Maintenance and replacement works being carried out on the security system at Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s official residence will cost the government RM20 million.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz confirmed the disclosure made by Tan Kok Wai (DAP-Cheras) in a written reply received by the MP today.

“The maintenance and replacement of security system at Seri Perdana costs RM19,570,000,” Nazri said in the reply, a copy of which was obtained by malaysiakini.

The Rempits are fighting back.

They say they won't stop unless there are efforts to legitimise the "sport."

As much as I hate them I kinda agree when they lamented,

The claimed that they were not society's trash as they are often made out to be.

Brader, when you endanger other people's lives don't expect to be treated like a Nobel Prize winner.

I find this funny though:

“There are among us graduates from foreign universities as well as professionals, like architects and engineers,” said Zaki who himself is a professional in the IT industry.

Brader, let me tell you something. Just because you are a graduate it doesn't mean you are smart. Never equate intelligence with paper qualifications . Your degree is just a tool. It's up to you how to use that tool to good effect. If you're a carpenter but you don't even know how to use the "tukul besi" then you're not a carpenter. Jadi tukang kebun aje lah.

I've met many so-called graduates who can't even figure out the simplest of things in life. Things which are common sense. Some can't even think. If you can't even think then your degree is as good as the toilet paper.

Nevertheless, Zaki The Mat Rempit hit it right when he said he was suspicious of the motives behind Mat Cemerlang.

“Looks like someone’s trying to get political mileage out of ‘taming’ us,” he said.

The tree with a face

This is the in thing in Kampung Payar, Kepala Batas at the moment - The Tree With A Face.

It has attracted droves of visitors and the area has become like a pasar malam. I bet that most of the visitors are Malays. The Malays just love this kind of "paranormal" thing although scientists claimed it's just a freak of nature.

It seems that village elders advised onlookers to "just look" and not to make comments.

"The youths irked local residents when they bathed in an ablution pond located in a mosque despite being told not to do so.

This led the angry residents to file a report with the Manjung Religious Department (PAIDM) and an operation was mounted.

In the subsequent raid, eight youths, including teenage girls aged between 15 and 19, were detained at a nearby hotel.

The daily quoted PAIDM enforcement officer Mohd Zainuddin Mohamed Zaini as saying that they found three boys sharing a room with one girl."

A total of RM6.7mil was not returned to the Federal Government by the end of last year and RM9.83mil was also spent to build houses that were of low quality

So, do you still want to donate to all the tabungs initiated by the government?

To some people, there's opportunity in adversity . To those born without a heart, it is an opportunity to cheat and songlap duit.

On the way back from Machang, one of the girls told me this true story.

"Once there was a blue painted house somewhere near Machang.

Everything about the house was blue.

It was owned by a wealthy Kelantanese businessman.

One day he fell ill. Very ill.

As he laid in bed, the MB of Kelantan Tok Guru Nik Aziz paid a visit.

Few days later, the businessman recovered from his illness.

He then changed the colour of his house.

It is now green."

KB is hot!

Just got back from KB - Kota Bharu. It's so hot over there. Rasa nak terbakar kulit. Stayed there almost two weeks till I'm familiar with the road. Went to all sorts of places, some I haven't heard before. Like Dewan Beta. No, it's not a hall. It's a name of a kampung.

When I was in Tanah Merah I met my old college buddies, Suria and Shafie. Both are husband and wife. We talked and talked. From stories of our ITM days to Planet Pluto. They moved there from KL so that they can get a better quality of life, especially for their children. I kinda agree with that. Kelantan is definitely different from KL. Life moves slowly. You can still buy a kuih for 10 sen. Like Shafie said, "kat sini gaji sikit pun boleh hidup senang lagi". I could see that they are happy in Tanah Merah. I hope they stay happy.

While sipping tea in one of the kampungs, I saw a Merdeka celebration at the school there. Siap ada gajah lagi. Wah... these Kelantanese take Merdeka Day seriously. One night, I saw a Dikir Barat competition. It was a treat watching them. The competing groups came with bright coloured baju. One group looked like a Christmas tree. Another had a pink tanjak or headgear. Maybe they were representing Puteri Umno, no?

KB is thriving. Who says there's no "pembangunan" in Kelantan? Went to Pasar Siti Khadijah again. Thought of inspecting the public toilet but my hunch tells me it's still dirty. It's a public toilet in Malaysia after all.

Though was busy running around, I tried as much as I could to catch up on news. Read about the passing of the Crocodile Hunter. You'll be dearly missed, mate. But I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I read about our first astronaut who, with great pride, would try to attempt the teh tarik in space. NASA should learn from us.

The Budget was announced while I was there. After the Budget I went to one sekolah agama rakyat (SAR). Met the Guru Besar. He told me the exemption of exam fees are only for government schools. It does not cover private or independent schools like his. According to him, the Kelantan government now has to spend RM1.2 million to cover the fees.

"Dulu kito tok seh sekolah agamo bawoh kementeriye, jadi dio buak lagu nie".

On the flight back I read Minister Hishamuddin's statement. It's true. Only government schools are exempted.

It makes me sad.

And I can't help but think of the Google mantra - "Don't be evil".

The Malay circus

As I blog this, TV3, RTM1 and Astro are trying to outdo each other by having this silly Siti, Mawi or Ina thingy.

It's plain stupidity. The Malays, especially, just like this kind of crap. They like to watch this sort of circus and the clowns are all Malays.

This is the sort of thing that makes me ashamed to be a Malay.

Kenduri & karaoke

Went to my cousin's son's wedding last Saturday. One thing about weddings in my kampung is that they must have a DJ and a karaoke set.

"Sesape yang nak nyanyi tu boleh datang ke khemah pilih lagu ye."

Hello, ni kenduri kahwin lah bukan kelab karaoke. I just don't get it, these people. Thank God nobody accepted the offer while I was there.

Another thing they like to do is play the music loud. Really LOUD. You can't even chat with the person beside you. I could see two old men shouting at each other just to make themselves heard. And that two old men already had "sound problem".

Saw mostly the same faces at the wedding. No hot babes. Only out-of-shape wives and moms of other people. Very few young girls. Kalau ade pun tak cun.

The mak andam is young though. She looks quite cute. I hope she's a she. And the bride has quite a nice body. For now, at least.

Weddings make me feel old. The young ones would call me Tok. The younger than young would call me Nyang. I shudder to think what their offspring would call me.

This time around I thought I could escape from the 22,222 ringgit question.

Until the pengantin made their grand entrance.

"Ko bilo laei Man?"

One cousin shouted at me amidst the blaring music.

I pretended I couldn't hear.

"Aaa? Tak dongar?"

She stopped asking.

I realise that I don't get that sort of question very often these days. Maybe they've given up hope on me. Or maybe they got tired of asking.

Sometimes I just give a cheeky answer. During one Raya, a cousin asked the same question. I answered,

"Esok pagi."

Toilet revolution

DPM Najib has called for a "toilet revolution" in the country.

He said, "the cleanliness and beauty of a country's toilets were a measure of how civilised it was."

When it comes to toilets we are way behind our neighbour Singapore. No, they are not being kiasu. They are just more disciplined than us. Or perhaps they aim better.

I doubt we can change the mentality of our people when it comes to toilets. We are, after all, Malaysians.

Which reminds me of my trip to Kota Bharu a couple of months ago. I went to the public toilet near Pasar Siti Khadijah. Paid 20 sen hoping that I could do my business in peace....but,

aggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!

The place looked like it hadn't been cleaned for ages. Shits floating in the bowl, pipes not working, no flush and it stinks to high heaven!

And all that for 20 sen.

If you wanna call your place Islamic City, fine, but dude clean your toilet first lah!
